Students pursuing the Trombone need to be able to vibrate their lips inside of the large mouthpiece to create a sound. As long as they can tighten and loosen their lips to make high and low sounds, they should be successful with practice. The student moves a long slide and stops the slide at certain places to achieve the proper sound. Trombones require patience, perseverance, and “a good ear”. This means the student needs to be able to recognize whether the note they are playing is too high or low with ease and should adjust their lips or slide position accordingly.
